   This quote is an example of Bob Ewell trying to protect his reputation by saying he doesn’t beat his daughter because 

“Just ‘fore sundown. Well, I was sayin’ Mayella was screamin fit to beat Jesus-” This quote shows that Bob Ewell would do anything to protect his reputation in Maycomb, even if it requires going to court even though he seems to be guilty. Bob Ewell probably has to be fairly insecure to have the need to say that his daughter was raped instead of beaten by the dad.

“Well, if I ain’t I can’t do nothing about it now, her ma’s dead,” Mr. Ewell is not well because in the quote above it shows how Mr. Ewells wife died and that would make anyone unstable.“I most positively am not, I can use one hand good as the other. One hand is as good as the other.” Mr. Ewell is answering Atticus’ questions of why he signed with  his left hand. Mr. Ewell explains why he did it by saying he is ambidextrous.
