His main physical traits are square cut features and graying black hair as described by Scout.  “Jem’s soft brown hair and eyes… contrasting odly with Atticus’s graying black hair and square cut features, but they were somehow alike”pg(173).

Throughout the book you learn Atticus loves to read the newspaper.  Scout and Jem will see him sitting at the kitchen table reading the newspaper, silently and peacefully after dinner. “As we grew older, Jem and I thought it generous to allow Atticus thirty minutes to himself after supper”pg(153).

Physical Home Environment:

Boo Radley’s house is old and beaten down with many broken windows. Up the street is the Finch family's house, which is well kept and in order. “Calpurnia glanced up at the high ceilings and long windows and said she thought she’d be warmer at her house”pg(77).

Atticus lives with Jem, Scout and, aunt Alexandra.  Calpurnia has her own house and different family but she stays there for long hours throughout the day.  “Well, your father and I decided it was time I came to stay with you for a while”pg(144).

As a parent he allows his children a lot of freedom to explore and learn for themselves.  Scout and Jem would often sneak out and go do whatever they wanted. Scout speaks very freely and is allowed to swear whenever. “Cal says she’s been cursing fluently for a week now”pg(90).
